We as a people are faced with a problem that weighs on our souls and saps our lives of the most basic and innocent trust and pleasure, and an insuperable obstacle exists somewhere to prevent our acting on it. In an opinion piece in The Washington Post, Marilynne Robinson speaks about the epidemic of gun violence that plagues America, or as she calls it in the opening paragraph, the “Great God Gun”: ![]() She continues: “Under the banner of patriotism it hates its nation and people and oversteps all civilized limits in its zeal to bring about fundamental change, whatever the damage.” Marilynne Robinson: ‘The gun-violence plague is evolving, dangerously’ In particular, she warns of the creeping in of fascism, which she calls, “an autoimmune disease.” Marilynne Robinson had an article in The Guardian last week warning-again-about the dangers posed by the politics and personality of Donald Trump. ![]()

Each time she moves she reinvents herself, not so much to try on a new identity but to rid herself of the original one-only daughter of a couple whose divorce was an awful, public scandal. Mclean Sweet, named for "the all-time winningest basketball coach of Defriese University," has moved four times in two years, following her father's job as a restaurant consultant. ![]() Dessen's 10th novel is another smoothly written journey of self-discovery. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She was kind, enthusiastic, warm, and a pleasure to get to know. “I’m writing to share my thoughts about Salina Yoon’s recent school visit and festival participation at The Harbor Springs Festival of the Book in Harbor Springs, Michigan. Haddix concentrates more on the action, suspense and mystery in this book with, thankfully, less emphasis on childish tantrums than in previous installments. She wants to find her grandfather, colony governor John White, who traveled to Roanoke to try to rescue his family in 1590 only to find the colony deserted and the colonists vanished. Andrea, the real Virginia Dare, insists that she doesn’t care if things are going wrong. Worse, a new character, who may not have the safety of the children in mind, takes charge. Suspense builds when Jonah and Katherine realize that time appears to be disturbed, perhaps endangering all of history. ![]() ![]() They lose their communication device, and they don’t know when in time they’ve landed. In Compromised, Strzok draws on lessons from a long career - from his role in the Russian illegals case that inspired The Americans to his service as lead FBI agent on the Mueller investigation - to construct a devastating account of foreign influence at the highest levels of our government. Keynotes at education conferences can be hit or miss. I was less than half a year into my return to comics and graphic novels, and prior to picking up American Born Chinese, I was almost exclusively reading mainstream superhero books, Jeff Lemire’s Sweet Tooth being the only exception. About eight years earlier than this conference (2009 to be exact), Yang first came into my life with American Born Chinese via a graduate school class on young adult literature. Yang was at a great place in his career at this point – he had already completed his run on Superman and had launched New Super-Man as part of DC Rebirth, he had received a MacArthur Genius grant, and he had been named the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. Almost three years ago to the day, I watched Gene Luen Yang give a keynote presentation at the SoMIRAC conference (Maryland’s reading teacher convention). I was incredibly excited to open my copy of Dragon Hoops. ![]() |
